They’re all different but share the same vision of utopian authoritarianism.
There was also Irish fascism, I think. And Konrad Heiden describes Pilsudski as a Polish fascist. Don’t even know who he was. President or something.
Konrad can go blank himself.
Yes, there was Irish Fascism. I didn’t include because I can’t find much about it. Same for Polish Fascism - Pilsudski’s flavor!
Prior to the brand being ruined by WWII, it was viewed by ‘elites’ as a up and coming governing philosophy. It was equally competitive in the minds of these ‘elites’ with socialism\communism. For example, FDR & cabinet at first had good things to say about Mussolini’s regime.
It’s all utopianism !
Bill Clinton and Tony Blair thought a clever new name for it ... “The Third Way”.
I also left out Hungarian & Romanian Fascism.
He’s long dead, but was one of the journalists on the ground in Germany, investigating and documenting the rise of the Third Reich. You done anything comparable?
Pilsudski was a Great Man, and he was no Fascist.
He’s mentioned once in passing, as demanding of Hitler ‘Do you want war or peace,’ whereupon Hitler began gushing about how wonderful peace was, while planning war. Heiden mentioned that Pilsudski was a fascist without giving details. From others I learned that he enacted a law making it a crime to turn in Jews and Gypsies to the Nazi occupiers before fleeing for his life, so if it was fascism, it was a relatively benign form of it. I’ve also heard some good things about Franco, so “fascist” is not always a pejorative, apparently. So you give us details. What else did he do that made him a “Great Man”.
He fought for Polish Independence, and led Poland in those days of Independence, he also proposed a Middle Sea Alliance between the Central European states as a bulwark against the Germans and the Russians.
Its a mistake to assume Fascism has to be antisemitic. Both British Fascism and Italian Fascism had Jewish members and leaders in it. It’s mainly nationalistic but if you read the links on British Fascism (Mosley) you see that’s not really true.
What all the flavors of Fascism have in common is utopian authoritarianism. Surrender your individual sovereignty and you will live in paradise.
fascism: a political philosophy, movement, or regime (such as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition
“...he also proposed a Middle Sea Alliance between the Central European states as a bulwark against the Germans and the Russians.”
That’s still a great idea! One I’ve entertained, too. Beats NATO all hollow. Ukraine and Poland could lead the way, the former as a charter member of a group less troublesome vis a vis Russia, and Poland as a defector, in order to attract other eastern European states.
But Konrad Heiden was no lightweight. He would have some basis for his characterization of Pilsudski. Got to get ahold of a new copy, since my old, torn-apart one is long gone. But I recall it was annotated.
If anything, it was Roman Dmowski, who was Pilsudski’s political rival, that could have been more of a “Fascist”, as he was more of the “Poland for Poles” type. Pilsudski was actually a Polonized Lithuanian, who advocated a Multi-Cultural Poland, incorporating the Jewish and Ukrainian minorities in Poland.
Well, then, Heiden made a mistake it seems. He didn’t mention it as a point against him, though; just as a fact. My inner historian is crying to get out. I’ll have to look into this further...
I think NATO should break up into several European run alliances. Your description of Pilsudski’s proposed Middle Europe alliance makes all the sense in the world. The US could just be an ‘observer’ affiliate or not. Let there be a true Atlantic alliance with the US as the big dog in it or not. With the Middle European alliance it carries no past NATO baggage. One could very honestly say ‘Whats your problem Russia it isn’t NATO and it’s purely defensive!’. Of course unlike NATO it shouldn’t be used for expeditions like in the Balkan, the Med, etc.
I think Israel could align itself with other middle-eastern religious and ethnic minorities, such as Kurds, Copts, Armenian and Syrian Christians, with Hindu India as the big dog, and defend against bad actors such as Iran and the Muslim Brotherhood. Not purely defensive. Recognizing Khuzestan as an independent nation would deprive Iran of its oil dollars, which would cripple their terror activities.
Interesting idea!
The Kurds certainly seem to be Kurds first Muslims second (and yes I know not all Kurds are Muslim!).
