Wildlife authorities in Illinois have shut down a two-mile stretch of road to vehicles through late October due to a yearly snake migration.
The U.S. Forest Service said Forest Road #345 – also known as "Snake Road" – in the Shawnee National Forest was closed to vehicles starting September 1st and will remain closed through October 30th. It’s also closed every year for a short time in the Spring.

USDA says Snake Road is home to 23 species of snakes, some of which are venomous including rattlers and copperheads, and one of the few places in North America where so many can be seen in one geographical location.

Democrats crossing the road.
Reasonable, as many people can’t seem to drive without killing something.
Southern Illinois, thank God. I’m north, near the Wisconsin border.
I would like to go down to the Shawnee National Forest area in 2024, however, for the total solar eclipse.
And cottonmouths.
Copperheads freak me out.
Q: Why did the chicken cross the road?
A: It was trying to get away from stampeding snakes.
I’m headed down there to make a new nature video, Dancing With Rattlesnakes. It’s better if you’re barefoot.
Snakes don’t migrate. They just leave the door unlocked for others to invade.
A gross driving experience I had in Washington state was driving through a mass frog migration at night, they covered the road and I had to keep going through them.
For poisonous snakes, I might have backed up and delayed the rest of the drive.
Saw a herpetologist at a national park give a demo with a gigantic Cane Break rattler, he was stepping on it pushing it around and everything and while the Cane Break was rattling away it did not strike and the herptoligist was proving the point that they don’t strike instantly they will expend more energy getting the hell out of the way... that said me and my brother-in-law were in the front row and that freaking snake was four feet from us... on a table top!
Q: Why did the chicken cross the road?
A: It was trying to get away from stampeding snakes.
A: to show the ‘possum how.
A: for fowl reasons
Q: Why did the second chicken cross the road?
A: Peer pressure.
Nearly stepping on rattle snakes is why I gave up spring Turkey season.
It coincides with rattler mating season in Minnesota.
To show the opossum it could be done.
“These people in Illinois are missing the boat. In Oklahoma they have a big annual rattlesnake roundup where they give prizes for biggest snake and such, and a cook off at the end.”
Are you sure you aren’t confusing us for Sweetwater Texas?
my thoughts exactly
I know about Sweetwater, but it seems when I was stationed at Altus 40 years there was something similar in OK, but on a smaller scale.
