Can someone explain why defensive shifts are a problem for the game?In theory, it'll open up the field.

In theory, it'll open up the field. In Theory, but not reality
Everyone is swinging for the fences and striking out 180+ times a year, so it won't make much of a difference.

Ok.
So how much of a shift is legal?
You always shaded for different hitters.
I am not a huge fan of the shift but if you want to play your 3ed baseman as a middle fielder between 2nd and 1st thats up to you. If the batter can pull it down the 3rd base line, oh well.
Banning it seems silly.
