Do Americans really eat cereal while commuting or transporting children?

There was a kid in my high school who would walk down to the bus stop every morning with a bowl of cereal in hand. He'd finish it while waiting for the bus, then set the spoon and bowl in some bushes by the bus stop.

At the end of the day when the bus dropped off, he'd root around in the bushes for his bowl and spoon, and carry them home.
