He could be known as King Henry the 9th.

How would getting rid of the monarchy change the NHS and energy bills?

The monarch doesn’t decide the politics of the nation; and I sort of doubt that manhole covers bear the royal insignia.

(And all those folks gathering outside of Buckingham Palace right now don’t seem to me that they’d care much about that anyway.)

I just saw one estimate that it will coast 1 billion ponds to swap out all of the paper currency and coins with Elizabeth's image to Charles'.

And if you visit the the UK, you will see anything official with an emblazoned "E II R" on it that will now have to be immediately replaced with a "C III R".

That means every manhole cover, mailbox, official uniform and badge, signage, official document etc.

Then there is the double whammy to the tax payer of what will be the most expensive funeral in history and coronation all in the next few days.

The Queens death and King's coronation will easily cost 50 billion pounds, I personally would bet it's closer to double that.

I watched some coverage from ITV news, and a commentator hinted that Charles was thinking about toning down his coronation to "better match the current mood of the country".

To be honest, the last ethnically English King of England was HHarold Godwinson, who was killed in action in 1066 against William the Conqueror, the first ruler of Norman origin.

BTW: am Iallowed to refer to the esteemed Mr. Reily as a “Scheißami” next time? ;-)

In 1917, the name of the British royal house was changed from the German Saxe-Coburg and Gotha to the English Windsor because of anti-German sentiment in the United Kingdom during the First World War.

That is true.

But non-English monarchs on the English throne were not exactly new then.
After the Normans, there were the Plantagenets, who hailed from Western France, who ruled until 1485, countig the Lancaster and York offshoots.

Then came the Tudors, with Welsh roots, who died out in 1603. Then came the Stuarts, who had been Kings of Scotland before ascending the English throne.

In 1714, Queen Anne, the last Stuart monarch, passed on without issue and left the crown to the House of Hanover, last of whose monarchs was Queen Victoria (1837-1901).

Then came the House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, from 1917 on called the House of Windsor, which rules to this day.
