That is how I feel about it. If life is that tenuous for you, you damn well should take guardianship of it instead of expecting others to do it.

And if you have kids with those kinds of allergies, you should imprint that mindset on them at the youngest age rather than expecting society to take responsibility for it.

I read some years back about a woman who went ballistic on some other woman because her child was eating a peanut butter cracker while seated in a shopping cart. That really irritated me.

I made some harsh remarks on that which I regret, but my outlook has not changed a bit.

One of our foster kids had a banana allergy. Before him I never knew that was a thing.

While he was living with us we always ate at home to make sure the food was banana free.

If we were going to be out I put up a picnic lunch.

He knew better then to eat anything someone else gave him.

He took very personal responsibility for his allergy and kept his allergy kit on him at all times.

My wife has another relative with a serious sensitivity to all sorts of airborne items, cigarette smoke, perfume, etc. Besides being a polite Canadian, she knows she has to be careful about avoiding situations. Going to a crowded church? Stay away from the Italians. Going to the supermarket? Pick a less busy time, etc. Except for obeying the rules of the establishment on smoking, she is not interested in making her problem their problem. It is the polite Canadian way.
