I doubt the others wearing medals on their suits were specifically asked by military leadership to stop wearing the uniform because they’d disgraced it. Seems like if THAT happens, good taste would dictate you don’t wear the medals either.

The wearing of medals, usually miniatures, on civilian suits used to be fairly common, especially in the UK and on the Continent. Not so much in the US but you did see it occasionally at veterans events.

In this archaic formal setting, I am sure it is perfectly appropriate.
