A California mom arranged for her estranged son to be abducted after he applied for emancipation, with the youngster then driven 27 hours to a boarding school.

Shana Gaviola, 35, is said to have embarked on the scheme in August 2021 on learning the unnamed 17 year-old boy wanted to legally break away from her.

Gaviola, of Fresno, has been charged with violating a protective over the incident by a federal court, and remains in custody.

The boy, who had successfully applied for a restraining order against Gaviola, was approached by a 'transfer team' from the Agapé Boarding School for Boys in Missouri.

He was working at his job in Fresno at the time, and was ordered into a rental car after being presented a falsified court record by two men.

The boy had his phone taken from him and his hands cuffed behind his back, and was driven for 27 hours to Agape.

His journey continued despite the two people in charge of the transfer being phoned to tell them that what they were doing was illegal.

Sandoval is also said to have ignored that instruction.

On arriving at the school, the boy was kept there for eight days, until he was released at the direction of his father, who has not been named.

he previously granted restraining order meant Gaviola could legally not stalk or contact her son or limit his movements in any way, having been accused of mistreating him.

The judge additionally ordered that only the teen was allowed to possess and operate his mobile device.

Despite being informed of the restraining order by police, Sandoval instructed his transport team to continue their journey from California to Stockton, Missouri, according to a report in the SF Chronicle.

This is the same school I’ve posted about in the past. The one that has a former doctor on trial for sexual abuse.

At 17, he is a young man and grown up enough to know to diassociate with a clearly unfit mother. I hope he gets a ton of money from this.

Which means she got pregnant at 16. She should have given him up for adoption. Now she’s in a world of trouble.

You can’t change the mind of a 17 year old.
Whatever path he was on, he was going to go down it with all the consequences. By even as early as 14 years of age, the path is set most of the time.

He’s with his father now and from the sound of this story that is where he should have been all along. Sounds like his mother was not quite right. Dads have a way with teen boys that moms just don’t posses.

Am I correct here parents?

Kidnapping across state lines is a federal offense (18 U.S.C. Section 1201). 20 years to life if the victim is under 18.

Correct in regards to some of the better fathers, who teach about wisdom and life. Too many of the young folks, though, lacked caring fathers in the last generation. We’ve seen two generations of extra ruin from the further errant paths of my fellow Baby Boomers, men and women.

Sounds like abduction / kidnapping to me.

Wow.

The folks in that car are going to face a crapload of federal charges…

This school needs to make sure they have their legal ducks in a row before they do this…

I understand the need to help troubled kids sometimes against their will, but in this case the mother legally did not have the authority to authorize this which makes these folks kidnappers….

“A California mom arranged for her estranged son to be abducted after he applied for emancipation...”

If he hadn’t actually been emancipated yet, then how is it an “abduction”?

Did the father have sole custody???
