"You're All I Need to Get By" is a song recorded by the American R&B/soul duo Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell and released on Motown Records' Tamla label in 1968. Written by Nickolas Ashford & Valerie Simpson, it became one of the few Motown recordings of the 1960s that was not recorded with the familiar "Motown sound". Instead, "You're All I Need to Get By" had a more soulful and gospel-oriented theme surrounding it, that was influenced by the writers, who also sing background vocals on the recording. During moments in the recording, Gaye can be heard encouraging Terrell to sing her verses, ad-libbing "Come on, Tammi" several times. A year later, Gaye was performing this song with Stax vocalist Carla Thomas at the Apollo Theater, when Terrell, who was seated in the front row in her wheelchair, began singing along, prompting Gaye to leave the stage and sing the song with Terrell, who was offered a microphone. It was Terrell's final performance before her death in March 1970. The song was played during Terrell's funeral while Gaye gave a brief, tearful eulogy.

I’ve always loved Motown Music, not just these two but Diana Ross and the Supremes, Smoky Robinson and the Miracles, etc..

That was an excellent performance of a wonderful song.
I’ve read that Ashford & Simpson were highly regarded by most session musicians because A&S were always professional and two of the few songwriters to enter the studio with the songs fully ‘charted’; All the Key changes; major and minor were written down.
Those on the keyboards could see what they were expected to do and in what sequences. The string sections, same story.
So, that meant not everything had to be hammered out by ear in the studio. Studios are rented by the hour and usually quite expensive.
Really? Gaye was a degenerate doper and all round bad human being. Was is this icon of the dysfunction negro culture being lauded here?

I think some performers will get inadvertantly stuck into acting like their over the top “Stage Presence” personality
even when their offstage. They may not even realize it at first. By the time they do realize it, they have already annoyed or alienated a number of people.
It’s a shame we lost Tammi so soon, so if Marvin did something nice for her, that’s one to the good for him.
