Five climbers killed, two injured while trying to reach top of Eurasia's tallest active volcano

The climbers were trying to ascend to the top of the Klyuchevskaya Sopka volcano, when the accident occurred about 500 meters below the 4,750-meter (15,884-foot) summit, the reports cited the prosecutor's office of the Kamchatka region as saying.

The Kamchatka peninsula in Russia's far northeast is noted for its array of active and dormant volcanos, hot springs and abundant wildlife.

The incident marks the latest in a recent string of climbing accidents involving volcanoes around the world.

Last month, three mountaineers died and 12 were injured after they fell while climbing Ecuador's Carihuairazo volcano. In June, a woman died and a climbing companion was injured when they scaled the highly active, off-limits peak of the Popocatepetl volcano in Mexico.

Read “Buried in the Sky” and/or “Into Thin Air” if you feel tempted to do something similar.

Not that it’s any of your business, but see his reply. It is candid and revealing.

IMHO both Tolstoy and Nietzsche both had a good analysis ( if such an understanding is possible) of “male courage”. Tolstoy is much more entertaining, nuanced and a pleasurable read. Nietzsche is far more difficult. Tolstoy would argue that courage ( the willingness to personally sacrifice for others or a cause) is a trait that emanates from God’s creation. Nietzsche argued that courage as well as cowardness results because each behavior is gratifying at the time to the individual. Bottom line is that very few of us have been in a position to see just how we as individuals would behave in such a situation. That is why men have always admired and honored other men who behaved honorably in combat or confrontation.

“White people die doing what they love” Tommy Sotomayor.

I dated a woman who wanted me to go hike up Mt. Saint Helens. I am an avid outdoorsman and said, “Nah” About a week after she did the hike, solo, it had a mini eruption.

It would be easier if you would just post what you think of personal courage and daring in regards to this thread subject.

I guess you aren’t a fan of it.

Thanks, but mountain climbing an active Volcano is not what I’d do. Racing boats and cars are my rush in life...
