Thomas Dolby - She Blinded Me With Science
When this song first came out, I at first thought the main lyric of the song was "She Blinded Me With Silence", which puzzled me at first.
This was before I saw the video on MTV (which was played frequently) and was introduced to the "The Home For Deranged Scientists", a rather palatial rest home staffed with young svelte nurses in which mostly elderly scientists cavorted about in various stages of mental illness or dementia.
The featured scientist, the one that repeatedly exclaimed "Science!", as well as ""Good heavens, Miss Sakamoto, you're beautiful!", was played by Magnus Pyke, who in real life had a rather distinguished career as a nutritional scientist and lecturer. He would die ten years after the making of the video at the age of 83.
As this was the video age of pop music and MTV was becoming a driving force, Thomas Dolby actually conceived the video first and then he wrote the song to fit the video.
All in all, not a bad effort. It became a Top 5 hit here in the USA and is recognized as one of the most notable pop songs of the 1980s decade.
Science!
“She Blinded Me With Silence”
Believe me. It happens.
I loved his music. Saw him in concert once...but his is indeed a bloody raging Leftist.
Brilliant musician. Alas, a leftist.
I just remember that he was not related to the creator of Dolby sound. In fact, his real last name wasn’t Dolby. His father was an archaeologist, but not an Egyptologist as he claimed. Nice song though. What happened to him? What happened to Dolby sound? Is that still a thing?
Very well busy person. Your wish is my command. Here you go...

I liked all his music videos. The ones for “Hyperactive” and “Airhead” got played often too.
The 1980s were chockablock with pop/New Wave/rock/you name it music talent, most of them unique in their music and style.
You might enjoy this and other tracks from an album a friend recorded for MCA back in 1982 . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WCFpTGJgIMY
BTW - my friend played all the instruments on the record !
Sigh. So much art I used to enjoy I cannot anymore.
For what it is worth, I can enjoy art produced by a Leftist, movies, music, whatever.
I can’t appreciate the art when they decide to use their celebrity to push their Leftist agenda.
This is a fairly recent article I found that raves about this "Sleep Convention" album by Trees - a synth-pop masterpiece!
I'll check out some of the other songs.
reminds me of the Democrats and RINOs of the last few years and how they run the country.
Waiting for the Fauci 2020 version...
That was a great song & a great time for music.
I think he also invented ringtones..
Loved his Astronauts and Heretics album, too.
Dane Conover . I met him for the first time on a rail platform in Tokyo on my way home from teaching English at NEC . Don’t know what prompted me , but I saw him standing about 20 feet away from me and just walked over and introduced myself . Turned out he used to live on Long Island near where I lived before leaving for Japan and that I knew his uncle ! We shared the train ride and decided to have a few brews ( thanks to beer vending machine ) at his apartment . Became instant friends . He has been living in CA - where is originally from - for at least 25 years .
Anyway, for every recording artist that makes it big, there are twenty other ones who are just as worthy but never catch the breaks to get to the big time. I like discovering this music so thanks again.
