In a case of highly charged sticker shock, a Florida Chevrolet dealer admits that it offered to replace the battery in a hybrid car for more than the vehicle is worth.
As reported by the website AutoEvolution, the case of the almost-$30,000 battery was being bandied about on social media for days, with some folks believing the tale and other relegating it to the pile of urban myths.
The story was based on a copy of an estimate for the battery of a 2012 Chevrolet Volt that was making the rounds. The Volt was a hybrid that was produced as Chevy was dabbling in the electric vehicle market. Its place in Chevrolet’s lineup has now been taken by the Bolt.
The estimate said that getting the battery would set the car’s owner back $26,853.99. Other costs brought the total bill to $29,842.15 — essentially $30,000.
According to the automotive site Edmunds, a 2012 Volt is estimated to go for between $7,999 and $17,590 these days.
Chevrolet advertises that its new Bolt starts at $25,000.
In the end, the truth about a used car came from a car dealer – in this case Roger Dean Chevrolet in Cape Coral, which prepared the estimate.
“This is an estimate for a 12 year old vehicle out of warranty and for a battery that is extremely hard to get, due to the older technology of the 12 year old vehicle,” the dealership posted on Facebook in an attempt to set the record straight.

I wonder how many miles he got out of that battery. It had a 100K mile warranty, but they didn’t have any available.
The battery in an EV is an integral part of its fuel, normal cars use gas as fuel and EV’s use batteries+charging current as fuel.
Gas is far cheaper per mile than the batteries+charging cost is per mile in an EV.
The EV is not economical compared to a combustion engine. it’s also not really a greener alternative.
With an EV it’s as though a combustion engine driver was only paying 1/2 the cost of gas at the pump until a day comes years later when it is time to pay the other half as a lump sum... a shockingly huge lump sum :-/
If they come up with a much better battery technology and if the EV’s are charged from nuclear power plants of safe design or hydro power then you have a viable EV IF it is of diesel/electric design. Diesel for backup and charging the batteries while running and the electric drive system is then used in dense cities to cut down on exhaust fumes.
The time of the EV will arrive but its a poor choice now just as solar’s day will come when battery tech has advanced.
The left always tries to force an idea down everyone’s throats before the tech is ready to support it.
When steam power came to ocean going ships they wisely would not depend entirely on steam at first but created motorized ships with backup sails... a hybrid. That is where EV’s are today, only a hybrid design makes sense and is reliable.

Guy was an IDIOT for buying such an old EV as the battery technology is changing almost daily, so OBVIOUSLY he was not going to easily find a replacement for something over 10 years old.
If he wants a car that old, he should quit virtue signalling and simply buy a gasoline car as they remain fixable for many DECADES after production.

A led light of high output produces a lot of heat. check out headlamps for autos.
The fact that an EV is suited to remote shutdown technology whereas an ICE vehicle is not is considered by many (who are not friendly) to be a feature, not a bug.

I wonder how many miles he got out of that battery. It had a 100K mile warranty; but, the article didn't say how many miles he was able to achieve. The warranty was mute since there were no replacement batteries available.
