A woman who was struck by a vehicle and killed Thursday in a Decatur parking lot, in what police say was a deliberate act, is being remembered as “a caring and loving friend to all who knew her.”
A graveside service will take place Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Midway Memorial Gardens in Moulton for Sherry Smith Sain, 64, who died Thursday.
According to Decatur police, Sain was intentionally struck and killed in the parking lot of Walmart Neighborhood Market, 1203 6th Ave. S.E., at about 9 p.m. Thursday.
Sain was dead at the scene. The driver of the vehicle that struck Sain, Preston Lamar Nelson, 38, of Huntsville, attempted to flee the parking lot but a bystander stopped the vehicle, which then stalled.
According to her obituary, Sain was a long-time resident of Decatur and a resident of Huntsville for the past 15 years. Sain and her husband Johnny owned and operated North Alabama Mortuary Express.
A GoFundMe page, established for her funeral and family expenses, called her “a cherished member of our community and loved by so many.”
On social media, Sain’s daughter, Amber Rutherford, said, “She was so loved.”
According to investigators, Nelson pulled into the parking lot in his Mercury Grand Marquis and parked in a handicapped spot near the front.
Nelson sat in his vehicle until Sain walked directly behind the vehicle. Then he accelerated rapidly, striking her and another vehicle. According to court documents, Sain was pinned against the other car.
Police say there is no known connection between Nelson and Sain. Nelson has been charged with murder and is being held in the Morgan County Jail on $500,000 bond.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny Sain, sister, Elizabeth “Liz” Hill, and brother, James “Kenny” Smith. She was also preceded by her first husband, A.T. Rutherford Jr.
The Perp killed a widow and a grandmother.

Why do I think this perp was very well known to authorities...
The suspect was identified as Preston Lamar Nelson, 33, of Huntsville.
That plus driving a Mercury grand marquis. Always a dead giveaway

This is anything but a small story. Be careful folks, it’s going to get bad.

We are starting to see cars used as weapons. Personal disputes, robberies, race hate or hate the world attacks.

I’d say his future is not going to be very secure.
Alabama is still Alabama. Their courts will deal with this. It won’t be like in Chicago or NYC.

Witness Amy Brown of Decatur, who said she called 911 to report the incident, said the victim was walking away from the store in the parking lot at 1203 Sixth Ave. S.E. She said she saw a man driving a dark gray Mercury Grand Marquis in reverse at a rapid speed, pinning the victim against another vehicle.
“He was parked in the first handicapped spot in front of the store, and he started in reverse, he then gassed it and she was pinned between the vehicles,” she said. The distance from the handicapped parking spot to where the collision of the vehicles occurred was about 30 to 40 feet.
Brown said the man quickly attempted to drive away but his car stalled a couple of times.
Brown said some other people went to the suspect’s car and told him he had killed somebody.
“He got out of the car and came running back up here, kneels down beside (Sain) and takes his hands and rakes her blood all over his face,” Brown said. “It was unreal, the look in his eyes. His eyes were so huge.”
Visually shaken, Brown called the scene “horrific.” “That guy, that guy’s face, I will never be able to get it out of my mind. That was the devil. He was the devil. God stopped him right down there and wouldn’t let his car run,” she said.
Brown said the man’s actions appeared “very malicious. It seems like it was done intentional. No remorse. How can you come up and put your hands in the blood? It was horrific.”
I was happy to see the $500,000 bail!
