We had one of McNamara's “idiots” in our BCT platoon in ‘69. There's no way in hell that he should have been in the Armed Forces. And the drill sgts rode him in exactly the same way Private Pyle was ridden by GySgt Hartman. He somehow hung in there until the day before graduation when he went AWOL. I hope when they found him he was given an honorable discharge.

Seeing Private Pyle I could only think of Gomer Pyle and Sgt Carter, then I finally remembered Full Metal Jacket. Say what you will but R Lee Ermy had the best lines in the movie.
