The army had this same program when I went to basic in 1975. The taught trainees how to read and write before going to basic training. It was called STC (Special Training Company)

I don’t have a program giving second third chances. However, what should happen is, upon failing, you are sent home for at least two months with guidelines that you have to meet on your own time.

Not everybody develops at the same rate.

We had one of McNamara's “idiots” in our BCT platoon in ‘69. There's no way in hell that he should have been in the Armed Forces. And the drill sgts rode him in exactly the same way Private Pyle was ridden by GySgt Hartman. He somehow hung in there until the day before graduation when he went AWOL. I hope when they found him he was given an honorable discharge.
