A New Zealand news anchor fired back at a viewer who she said has repeatedly complained about her traditional face tattoos.
Oriini Kaipara, who co-hosts the political current affairs show "Newshub Nation," shut down the remarks from a viewer who she said emailed her and described her tattoos as “offensive and aggressive looking” and a “bad look.” The viewer’s comments come after Kaipara made history last year as the first person with a moko kauae, a cultural tattoo worn by Māori women, to anchor a prime-time news program.
“Please refrain from complaining further, and restrain your cultural ignorance and bias for another lifetime, preferably in the 1800s,” Kaipara wrote in an email to the viewer, according to a screenshot of the message posted to her Instagram stories on Wednesday.
Kaipara, who has had the tattoo on her chin since 2019, also condemned the discrimination and harassment that people with the traditional moko marking endure.
The Māori people are an Indigenous and Polynesian group in New Zealand. In Māori culture, the sacred chin tattoo symbolizes a transition from girl to adulthood.

Hideous.
Btw
She’s got plenty white seed in her btw
The chin ink doesn’t enhance her comely face
Honestly
IDK, looks more like a spits.
She is cute
I’m down
… Let me abos go loose, Lou
Let me abos go loose (oh!)
They’re of no further use, Lou
So let me abos go loose
Just the abos sing!
[Chorus]
Tie me kangaroos down, sport
Tie me kangaroo down…

Yah, like the Nose Rings, Gauges, Piercings, Tattoos, and other forms of self mutilation that have become so common here in the US are any better!
Not knowing the code for any of these I just assume they are all declarations of some form of “Gay” and stay away.
The tattoos definitely make her look ugly. But perhaps in less-evolved cultures, closer to those of the Denisovans and Neanderthals, opinions may be different.
Funny the rest of her look is so modern without a hint of ethnic hair or dress. But that tattoo is the only thing you see. Mostly because it is out of place with the rest of her look.
Apparently it wasn’t in her job description, but some Karens think it is.
“offensive and aggressive looking”
You poor little thing. You’re just too high strung aren’t you?
She should be wearing a traditional Maori dress on television.
Looks like a savage. Idiotic
My mother’s stance that she always used to guide her children was that people who got tattoos did so before they matured and regretted them or they were just stupid.
I always thought of that when my friends in the Navy wanted to get tattoos and many did and wanted me to join them. I also echoed to them what she said, before and after they got them.
Imagine what this pretty lady’s face is going to look like in 20 years. It is absolutely going to look stupid.
It kind of reminds me of the facial tatoo of Olive Oatman, who was kidnapped by the Yavapai in the Mojave Desert.
They are definitely not worse, but she can claim the all-important “culture” whereas whites and Christians cannot.
Lots of appropriation going on there.
Nothing “traditional” about it.
“No member of the faculty is to maltreat the Abos in any way whatsoever if there’s anyone watching.”
