Gretna woman arrested after using gasoline while grilling, igniting neighbor's home, police say

Authorities suspect a Gretna woman who used gasoline to light a barbeque grill accidentally set her neighbor's house ablaze Saturday evening when the fuel can ignited, according to an arrest report.

No one was injured in the fire at a home in the 3000 block of Hero Drive, said Chief Michael Labruzza of the Davy Crockett Steam Fire Company No. 1. But resident Ruby Villacorta Romero, 33, was arrested and booked with negligent arson, Gretna police said.

Villacorta had planned to cook on an open grill that was set up under a carport at her residence, Gretna police said. The arrest report said she doused the grill with gasoline to help start the fire.

But when Villacorta tried to light the grill, a large flame erupted, igniting the full gas can that was on the ground next to the grill, the report said. Villacorta is accused of grabbing the gas can and tossing it away from the carport.

But she threw the flaming can toward her neighbor's residence, where it hit the side of the house, authorities said. The outside of the residence caught fire, melting the siding and causing moderate damage, according to Labruzza.

Firefighters responded and extinguished the blaze. Villacorta told authorities the fire spread to her neighbor's house after she tried to use water to put out the flames.

“The arrest report said she doused the grill with gasoline to help start the fire.”

Wow. Turns out that it did help start the fire.

Yah know, if we’d just illegalize gasoline, this kind of thing wouldn’t happen.

No picture, so...

1. It didn’t happen. The internet has rules, you know.

2. How are we supposed to know if she’s guilty without a picture?

My old man used to light the Weber grill using gas.

“Now you NEVER add gas to hot coals or a fire! So make sure you use plenty at the very beginning.”

Then he’d stand back a few feet and use a wooden match to toss into the grill. Then WOOSH! (When I would light it I ended up standing farther back and going through several matches.) I think the concave shape of the bottom of the grill gave it a more impressive mushroom cloud as it ignited.

My buddies gave me a hard time about the gasoline flavored burgers, but I never tasted it. Pretty sure that was all burned off by the time you started grilling.

LOL. What a maroon.

As I recall it’s the only community in Jefferson Parish where fireworks are legal - but I’ve been away for a while.

I’ve done it before too.

As long as the coals are covered with a good layer of ash it doesn’t matter how you started it.

Sounds like our high school chemistry teacher.

Or was it...”Do what you oughter, never add acid to water.”

During the 4th of July holiday, there are lots of fireworks stands along the Westbank Expressway.

But for the most part, it’s hard to differentiate between the fireworks and the gunshots.

When I was in college is use gasoline to start a charcoal fire.

You just use a little bit, though.

I remember once I’d forgotten the right amount to use, so I asked myself:”Do I use a teaspoonful, or tablespoonful?”

A teaspoonful seemed like too little, so I used about tablespoonful.

WOOOSH!

“Ugh, must be a teaspoonful”
