When I was in the fifth grade, I stole my teachers paddle. And I was one of the good students. LoL

You know, some years ago, I had someone ask me in front of my kids if I used corporal punishment.

I turned to my kids and asked, “What would you prefer? A spanking, or going to bed without a story?”

They unanimously, and enthusiastically replied in unison, “A spanking!”

See, a spanking lasts less than a minute. Going to bed without a story lasts 24 hours. And when done right, with prayer, and explanation, and hugs afterwards, a spanking is actually a really good thing.

Nothing like a “time out” to straighten out a disruptive student. (Sarcasm)

I received instruction from "the Board of Education" a number of times myself. Given a choice between whacks or a suspension, I took the whacks.

I was introduced us to the Board of Education several times during the time I lived in Texas. A large wooden paddle with holes drilled in it to cut down on wind resistance. In Junior High the teachers would send kids down to see Mr Hailey the Boys Principal for however many swats the teacher thought appropriate for whatever offense committed. He’d take off his suit coat, loosen his tie, unbutton the top button of his shirt, roll up his sleeves, and then take several practice swings. When he was done with all that we had to empty our back pockets, bend over and grab our ankles. If you straightened up you got an extra swat.

My 7th grade P.E. teacher (Mr. Allen) used a size 15 high top tennis shoe. He also smoked Camel non filter cigarettes while we ran laps on the track. He was fair to us kids and I liked him.

I never understood “suspension”... If you have a caring home life, yea, nothing the school could do to you would match the fury waiting at home...

But for a lot of kids, particularly in certain socioeconomic segments, anymore there is utter apathy at home, so a suspension is just a day off of school for kids who probably doesn’t even want to be there in the first place.

“The Board of Education.”

My father was in education. Principal and eventually superintendant.
He had the shop teacher make a custom paddle called “The pursuader”. It had air holes to reduce the cushion effect, it stung!

It eventually found a home on the wall of his den.

Though an advocate of corporal punishment, this is really the role of the parents, combined with consistent teaching of objective truth.

LOL

I remember getting a whack from the baseball coach with what appeared to be a cricket bat with holes drilled in it.

I deserved it. He told us what the rules were, and what the penalties would be if they were broken. And I broke them on day one.

There were five of us after class waiting for disciplinary action.

And he was a man of his word.

This society is far too lenient on juveniles. Suspension hurts the kid developmentally but rewards him with indolence. Another option: make the young perp attend a Saturday work detail or solitary confinement.

I got a few swats as a kid in school, every time they called my Mom to ask permission, she said you better whack him good because he is getting double when he gets home.

Can’t imagine why rewarding bad behavior with time off from school isn’t more effective... Of course suspensions inconvenience, embarrass, and indirectly punish the parents; for many kids who act out, that’s mission accomplished.
