The fan motor is thermally protected. There is a fuse that will blow if it gets too hot. There’s also a fuse in the power cord. Both are UL requirements.

I doubt the fans bearings are made to spin horizontally. It probably would get real noisy (relative to the racket a $20 box fan normally makes).
