Welcome to Vacationland Wondering where this column was last week? Sorry. I forgot to say I’m taking two days off. My computer’s exhausted. I went to Maine. Why? I’m a world traveler. Done Cambodia, Indonesia, most of South America, Fiji, Kabul, Kathmandu, Beirut, Siberia, India, Outback, Galapagos, Iran, Iraq, Laos, the whole Caribbean, all Europe, Fiji, Samoa, New Guinea, China, Japan, Taipei, Alaska, Hawaii, Himalayas, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Guam, etc — but Maine? Not. I’ve also not seen Oklahoma — but who cares? Longtime friends whose ancestors founded the state of Maine in the 1800s and are in its museums and histories invited me. It’s north. Eight hours as the crow and a BMW flies. Borders Canada, so it’s cool. Clean. Airy. Fresh. Ocean. Shoreline. Beaches. Open sky. Green. Trees. Lighthouses. Boats. Harbors. Coastlines. No litter. No trash. It’s polite. Friendly. Inexpensive. Seafood. Lobsters the size of Radio City. Locals whose behinds overlap the state of Texas all stuffed into shorts. Realtors could establish an entire campsite on the average ass.

She is a journalist that has been sent on assignment to do stories in many of these foreign countries. Newspapers and magazines used to do that. She has been around for awhile.

She was born in 1930. She was a model. She started working for the post in 1979. She is also wealthy. Lives in a penthouse on Park Ave in Manhattan. She has a different perspective on the world than you and I.
Portland’s a little too left for my taste, I prefer parts South and North. For years we would summit Katahdin in October and camp in Baxter State Park, when I was younger :)
Allagash White for me.
Maine men like their women for warmth in the winter and shade in the summer!
What are Lobster Rolls going for these days?
But no diversity!!!
been in maine for over 4 years now and have only met one sourpus, and he was just having a bad day - subsequent meetings have been cordial. if you stop by the side of the road, locals will stop and make sure you’re ok. i met a man who closed his business for 2 days just to help me out. don’t ever claim that mainers are dude. i bet they saw your bmw and new york plates and knew what kind of snooty priss you are.
So a win-win situation?
We were there 3 years ago. From our condo 2 hours away, she and my wife decided to visit Jamestown...at 2:30 in the afternoon. We arrived 30 minutes before closing time.
I opted to drive over to Yorktown, purchased the self guided tour, 15 minutes before the gift shop closed.
At 7:30, they decide how neat it would be to dine at Christiana Campbell's, which closed at 8. We arrived at 7:58, but they were very gracious (likely this was not unusual for them). It was a great experience, and I tipped our waitress accordingly.
After that vacation, I have sworn off future adventures with that sister in law. If my wife wants to go, no problem. I stay home with the dog, we're all happier. Besides, you aren't drinking alone if the dog is with you.
a seed potato
I wonder if the low crime rate and lack of diversity have any correlation?
🤔
We call the big girls BMWs.
“Big Maine Woman.”
Directly correlated.
$28 to $80 for a “triple”.
Of course not!
It's funny. I just stumbled across a thread on Twitter wondering why the subways in poor Bulgaria are cleaner and safer than the subways in New York City.
The Rain in Maine falls Mainly on the Brain!( grin)
BMWs ........... and the are a lot of fun.
“More Women Move Into Maine’s Rough And Risky World Of Lobstering”
NPR does NOT know the half of it either.( How to keep warm in a shanty)
I assume you mean the original Amish rather than that which must not be said?
“Worst: No diversity”
LOL...that’s not a bug!
Both. No one crosses them boys.
