A Snapping Turtle Hatchling is making it’s way through high grass to it’s destination.
A Long Island animal group is alleging that Suffolk County workers "literally mowed down" more than 100 snapping turtle hatchlings and demanding an investigation into what happened.
John Di Leonardo, the president and executive director of Humane Long Island, said that a resident made the gruesome discovery of the dead young reptiles earlier in the week at the Meadow Croft Estate in Sayville.
On Wednesday, he called on the county parks department and the New York Department of Environmental Protection to look into the matter, and said officials need "enact a prohibition on mowing over or otherwise disturbing nesting sites" at the estate during the spring, summer and into the fall.
"This massacre of more than 100 hatchlings is just the latest of a disturbing series of deaths attributed to human carelessness on Long Island, including federally protected shorebirds having their nests destroyed on the South Shore, a yellow warbler dying after being caught in a glue-trap at a Nassau County Preserve, and a rash of wildlife deaths attributed to rodenticides," Di Leonardo said.
Karenlynn Stracher, a volunteer with the organziation, said that protecting snapping turtles — which are a keystone species and New York's state reptile — is crucial because they serve as "nature's cleanup crew and removing detritus from our lands and waterways."
Late-term abortions?
We did not intentionally try to catch the turtle -
we were fishing for fish in a local lake and caught the turtle.
We thought the line was stuck of a log or something -
until we reeled it in closer. Boy were we surprised!
The thing was so big it's shell got stuck in the plastic
trash can we used to transport it - which was sort of
a 'dicey' operation to say the least.
I used to work for a landscaper whose dumbass employees had the same attitudes. I don't know how many dead bunnies and baby birds I witnessed in their wakes..........
These aren't alligator snapping turtles which are not even commonly related to these. These are just your common pond snapper.......
IMO they are the pit bulls of turtledom.
The boys used to capture them and we would relocate them far away to a swamp or pond.
After several years doing this; a Yankee Magazine article told the saga a man in New England who would relate snappers he found to remote lakes and ponds.

There are no shortages of snapping turtles.

I own a 14 acre lake, between the soft shelled snappers and the regular ones we can’t keep any waterfowl around, lord knows how many fish they take too.
I declared war on them when I saw my favorite duck get pulled under and killed while I watched from the other shore a few years ago, since then I have become a very efficient “Jugger” now.
YUP; they are real tasty in turtle stew!
