Apple is looking to produce Apple Watches and MacBooks in Vietnam, Nikkei Asia reported.
Luxshare Precision Industry and Foxconn, two of the iPhone maker’s suppliers, are already testing the production of the Apple Watch in the northern part of Vietnam. This would mark Apple’s first time making the two products in the country following its diversification away from China’s production lines.
According to data from Counterpoint, the Apple Watch remains the most purchased smartwatch in 2021, holding a 30% market share that year. It beat out competition from Samsung, Huawei, and Garmin.
The development comes after Apple reportedly moved some parts of its iPhone production to India. It also looks to shift iPad assembly in the South Asian country as well as in Vietnam.
According to an earlier report, China-based manufacturer BYD built production lines in Vietnam to produce small quantities of iPads in the country.
The recent moves by Apple follow supply chain disruptions brought upon by lockdowns in key cities in China due to Covid-19.
Vietnam, where the young people curse their elders for kicking out the Americans.
”We could’ve been Japan or South Korea!” they often remind themselves.
Britain’s Marshall Amplification has been making their lower-priced electric guitar amplifiers in Vietnam for some time now. They’re very good.
If i’m looking at sneakers and the choice is Chinese made vs Vietnam. Vietnam wins every time. I may not like Viet commies but they aren’t the mortal threat China is.
Tariffs are good.
Tariffs are righteous
Tariffs are patriot candy!!
Dees nothing to help the US economy and US workers.
Big nothing burger...
Instead US workers being shat on they are now being pee'd on.
Taiwan’s TSMC makes Apple’s newest “M” chips. If the Chicoms take Taiwan, they have control of TSMC. Then they have they have Apple by the short hairs, along with most other electronics manufacturers.
The US should make corporations that manufacture IN the US tax-exempt to encourage re-shoring. That would require a precise new definition of “manufacture” to include a substantial proportion of US manufactured components, to retain the “US manufactured” designation.
Last two times China attacked Nam did not go well for the PLA.
Remember when Foxcon agreed to build a $10+ Billion production facility in the US???
Yeah, that was all smoke and mirrors.
Well, now they want to skedaddle out of China ... I hope China makes it painful for them.
They had a chance to do something in the US starting in 2017 and would have help alleviate their supply change problems, but decided that the US investment was just some words to avoid new tariffs back in 2017/18.
They have no choice. If war breaks out between China and Taiwan, Apple is out of business.
Rom one communist country to another. Vietnamese work for rice, not yen.
You think they will take it sitting down?

Hopefully laying down
Yep, my first choice is Made in the USA, followed by made in friendly countries. Then “anywhere but China”.
BYD owns US politicians. Sells electric buses here.
The ones sold in San Francisco cannot get up the hills reliably. Mayor at the time was now gov Gavin Newsom.
He also says he bought 1.4 billion worth of face masks in April 2020 that were to come from the BYD bus company. No masks ever showed up. That money I bet was a buy in to run for president.
Prolly just about all Apple production is still in China. But some is being moved to Vietnam. Apple should move as much production as possible out of China. Thailand and Philippines are also good for Apple to consider.
And Vietnam’s best troops were dealing with the Khmer Rouge. It was “reserves” that handed China its ass.
Even the Uber lib mayor of Albuquerque was smart enough to send BYD buses back.
