One of my former bosses, who was a retired Army Colonel, did a 2-year stint in Saudi Arabia as a civilian consultant back in the 1980s. He never drove a vehicle there, always had a local chauffer because of that.

The main reasons for accidents involving drivers from the Arab society are: disobeying traffic lights, driving at excessive speed, not keeping a distance, not giving the right of way, crossing between lanes, and disobeying traffic signs.

That sounds like driving in Southern California, except there are a limited number of Arabs.

I was hauling gravel in a “ pete “ pulling a belly dump.i was returning to the pit .
A middle eastern driver, loaded, made a left turn right in front of me.
Had i been loaded i wouldnt have been able to stop

Years ago I was driving from Vegas to LA to catch a flight. Thanks to a huge accident on I-15 I arrived at the outskirts of the city about an hour later than I had planned. It was afternoon rush hour. I nearly **** myself. A 20 mile long line of cars...about 10 inches apart...doing 60MPH. It's a miracle that I survived.

Yes, I spent the better part of nine years in the Middle East. I understand the insh’allah culture. I even turned it on ‘em a couple of times, like when a contractor asked me if he’d be paid by a certain date after completing a construction project. I figured it was fair since he’s given me that answer on a few occasions when I’d asked him when a part of the scope would be completed. Heh!

I never drove over there, except on base. It being a passenger could be terrifying at times.

Vehicles are halal?

When did Mad Mo’ announce that?

“What’s fun is driving two weeks in Montreal without understanding French and without GPS directions.”

Aren’t many of the streetsigns bilingual?

If Montreal is as bad as you say it is, I can only imagine Quebec City is worse.

Yep - you are absolutely right. I once saw chunks of a car stuck up in a palm tree in Kuwait City. They’re nuts there. But I must say that drivers in Sicily are just about as reckless though their driving skills, as in racing skills, are much better than those on display in the Middle East.

Have you read “The River War?” I got it from Amazon and it was a print-to-order version and omitted that quote. I think it was Churchill’s first book.

LOL - that sounds about right.

No I have not read The River War, but that quote has been repeated numerous times here on FR and elsewhere.

It's also (still) possible to verify that the quote is in fact due to Churchill in The River War, although I won't be surprised if it scrubbed from the internet at some point.

You can easily Google it and find the quote at these sources, among others:

Quotes from book The River War

The River War Quotes

Winston Churchill - The River War (1899)

That the passage was not present in the version you got from Amazon is — at the very least — interesting.

The book is available free on line from several sources.

It is well worth the time to read it.
