My memory may be faulty. I got out of the Navy 30 years before Teele joined and promotions may have changed drastically since then, but as I recall we entered boot camp as SR. On completion of boot camp we became SA and after just 6 months in grade, we were eligible to attain SN.
Two years as a SA does not seem like proficient advancement to me. However, as I said, my info is dated.

As I remember, E-3 was obtained after A school which followed boot camp.
An E-2 with 2 years would indicate no A school.
