Associations between FTO rs9939609 polymorphism, serum vitamin D, mental health, and eating behaviors in overweight adults.
Mehrdad M et al. 2021
This study aimed to investigate the association of the FTO rs9939609 gene polymorphism with eating behaviors, eating disorders, and general mental health in overweight adults (N=197), considering their vitamin D intake as a mediate factor. The polymorphism was selected because it is the most common and strong variant in association studies on obesity, and it is suggested that they might play their role by changing eating behaviors and satiety responsiveness. Eating behaviors were assessed by the Persian version of the Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire-Reduced-18 (TFEQ-R18). The self-report questionnaire has 18 items assessing three dimensions of eating behaviors consisting of cognitive restraint (CR), uncontrolled eating (UE), and emotional eating (EE). In total, 53.8% of the participants had insufficient vitamin D intake. Results of the association analysis between rs9939609 and eating behaviors revealed that participants with AA genotype showed a higher EE score than those with the TT genotype after considering important confounding variables. Moreover, AA genotypes showed a higher EE score than other genotypes in those with insufficient vitamin D intake, while this test did not show any significant differences between the genotypes in terms of UE and eating disorders in those with insufficient vitamin D intake.
