That reminds me of reading The Phantom Major, about Sir David Stirling (pretty sure he was knighted) and the formation of the SAS.
There were good reasons besides German air reconnaissance that they laid up during the day, and traveled at night through the desert, to get to German airfields and ammo dumps behind the front lines.
Thank you so much for that recommendation. Mr K (not the one on this forum) is a huge fan of war stories. (Did you know that a really good place to look for war books is your local thrift store?)
