Coyotes are here to stay in North American cities – here’s how to appreciate them from a distance

People often fear for their own safety, or for their children or pets, when they learn about coyotes in their neighborhoods. But as an interdisciplinary team studying how people and coyotes interact in urban areas, we know that peaceful coexistence is possible – and that these creatures actually bring some benefits to cities.

Our team is working to learn how people feel about coyotes in their urban communities so that we can identify the best ways to foster positive human-coyote relationships. In Madison, we’ve found that many people appreciate coyotes and are likely to respond positively to messages that highlight coyotes as a valued part of the urban landscape.

Based on existing research, we believe urban landscapes have plenty of room for coyotes and humans to coexist peacefully. It starts with each species giving the other enough room to go about its business.

Locally, the favorite among farmers and ranchers is Remington 22-250 varmit loads. With 50 grain bullets it can hit 4,000 fps.

My brother shoots one.

I have a guy I know that is one of the top coyote killers in he nation. If your state
Ag Department has a three county wide problem and they go for the best in the nation, he is who gets sent out. As a Predator Specialist he has spent 80% of his time on coyotes for the last 16 years in the western US.

He lives and breathes killing coyotes.

My great uncle worked as a trapper for the State of Texas.

He was a little man, but a great shot.

Biggest plague we have are wild hogs. Nothing will eradicate them. They have even resorted to hunting them from helicopters. It works, but there are too many.

If any of y’all have seen Carnivore on the Pursuit Channel, you’ve seen how we deal with Coyotes. Shot several shows here on the ranch.

I have never discussed the wild hog issue with him. I am sure he has taken some as he didn’t grow up out west.

Our two Great Pyrenees live and breathe hunting coyotes too (except when they wistfully and unsuccessfully try to be lapdogs.)

I think before a vote is taken on any coyote control measure, the word “coyote” should be replaced with “giant rat”.

Same way she appreciates groundhogs

The very ‘best’ of ‘woke’ writing.

We’re doomed….

I find that a nice evening out in our best evening wear, a fine dinner with a chilled bottle of chardonnay, some roses, and later on some Barry Manilow works wonders.

From a distance? Like crapping in my trees in the front yard? Cuz that’s how close they get to me. 15 feet from the front door.

interdisciplinary group of city fools is more like it. What is it with liberals and wolves or coyotes? These animals are not their friends.
