Even the attempted murder of a police officer should carry a mandatory sentence of death (why should we cut criminals slack just because they're incompetent?). And if there are (at least) three eye-witnesses whose stories corroborate each other, sentence is to be carried out immediately. No appeals, no delays, straight from the courtroom to the gallows.
