Modifying current strain in a lab

Mutating single-stranded RNA viruses (HIV, coronaviruses, hepatitis C) is easy, because they don't self-edit during replication.

Smallpox and MPOX by contrast are HUGE, double-stranded DNA viruses which eliminate point mutations as they replicate. The smallpox virus from an Egyptian mummy and from the last human case in 1977 are identical.
