Fans of the beloved franchise Star Trek are mourning the tragic death of Nichelle Nicholas - who passed away from natural causes on Saturday night at the age of 89.

The actress, who is best known for playing Lieutenant Uhura in the sci-fi series, has received an outpour of love from former costars, celebrity friends, and supporters all around the world, after her son, Kyle, confirmed the sad passing on Sunday evening.

But what had she been up since she landed the history-making role more than four decades ago? In the wake of the heartbreaking loss, FEMAIL has uncovered everything she, and her castmates, have accomplished since the space show went off the air in 1969.

Some went on to launch major careers - landing a slew of big movie and TV show roles - while others struggled to land acting gigs, despite the show's immense fame.

The NBC series, which premiered in 1966 and went on for three seasons, was created by Gene Roddenberry and followed the adventures of the starship USS Enterprise and its crew - which was led by Captain James T . Kirk and his first officer Spock.

Aside from Nichols, it starred William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, James Doohan, Eddie Paske. It went on to become one of the most popular shows of its time, and has since inspired numerous other TV shows, remakes, movies, and spinoffs.

As Nichols sadly passes away, take a look at where the rest of the Star Trek cast is now - 43 years after it came to an end. From their other acting credits and achievements to their love lives and scandals, here's a look back at their impressive careers.

. . . .and Takei is in my informal โ€˜Dead Poolโ€™. Shatner as well. And, of course, Brandon and Pelosi. Celebs tend to die in threes, for some odd quirk of chance. . .

It was the last Dirty Harry movie...It was OK...

By the way, Takei was in an episode of MIAMI VICE...He played a guy who laundered drug money...

I wondered that as well. I think 89 years is a full life. Nobody live forever.

NOBODY LIVES FOREVER...A good book...I read it a long time ago...

From what I remember, the station there, BBC-1 (I believe) replaced "The Lucy Show" with the first UK runs of "Star Trek".

And because there was already a British show running at that time named "Star Chase" or "Star Race" or some-such (it wasn't a sci-fi show; it was about interviews with tv stars), they advertised "Star Trek" as... wait for it... "The William Shatner Show!"

Walter Koenig was a regular cast member of Babylon 5 after Star Trek.

No, he was not a regular cast member.

Koenig appeared a total of only twelve times in a series spanning 110 episodes and six movies. He was a recurring guest star.

I think Sulu’s next project is called: “The Monkey Poxers”.

The article describes Scotty’s military service this way.
“”Doohan was born on March 3, 1920, and grew up in Vancouver, Canada. He spent seven years serving in the Air Force from 1938 to 1945.””

Wikipedia gives us this description.
“”In 1939 he enlisted with the Royal Canadian Artillery, 14th (Midland) Field Battery of the 2nd Canadian Infantry Division. From there, he was moved to the 13th Field Regiment of the Canadian 3rd Infantry Division in their 22nd Field Battery. By 1940 he was a Lieutenant and was sent to train in Britain prior to Operation Overlord. He first saw combat landing in the 2nd Wave in a Recce Party at Juno Beach on D-Day. The 13th Field Regiment was interspersed with the Regina Rifle Regiment landing at “Nan” Sector of Juno Beach. After shooting two snipers, Doohan led his men to higher ground through a field of anti-tank mines, where they took defensive positions for the night. Crossing between command posts at 23:30 that night, Doohan was hit by six rounds fired from a Bren gun by a nervous Canadian sentry:[2] four in his leg, one in the chest, and one through his right middle finger. The bullet to his chest was stopped by a silver cigarette case given to him by his brother.[7] His right middle finger had to be amputated, something he would conceal on-screen during most of his career as an actor.[9]

Doohan graduated from Air Observation Pilot Course 40 with eleven other Canadian artillery officers[10] and flew Taylorcraft Auster Mark V aircraft for 666 (AOP) Squadron, RCAF as a Royal Canadian Artillery officer in support of 1st Army Group Royal Canadian Artillery. All three Canadian (AOP) RCAF squadrons were crewed by artillery officer-pilots and accompanied by non-commissioned RCA and RCAF personnel serving as observers.[11][12] Although he was never actually a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force, Doohan was once labelled the “craziest pilot in the Canadian Air Force”. In the late spring of 1945, on Salisbury Plain north of RAF Andover, he slalomed a plane between telegraph poles “to prove it could be done”, earning himself a serious reprimand. (Various accounts cite the plane as a Hurricane or a jet trainer; however, it was an Auster Mark IV.””

I was lucky enough to have met Shatner, Doohan, Takei, Nichol, and Nimoy at various shows and get their autographs and to be photographed with some of them. Finally found one of the last photo autographed pics of Kelley in my collection. He looked great.

They were nice, friendly people and will be missed.

Walter Koenig did some voice work for the game Star Trek Online around 2016. Something else that comes to mind is that he played himself in an episode of Futurama that aired around 2002. Beyond that I know little else.

Itโ€™s an UK newspaper, they just donโ€™t understand Star Trek the way we do.

Lillian Gissen is a young Millennial who lives in NYC, writes stories about celebs but has probably never watched a single episode of the original Star Trek.

Not a regular cast member, but PsiCop Alfred Bester is a hugely important recurring character.

We had a neighbor back in those days. A very sweet West Indian lady, who loved, loved, loved Shatner in TJ Hooker. It was the highlight of her week!

You are so lucky!!

with that said I believe it was Shatner who could not believe all the hype with the Star Trek fan club.

I’m like come on man, some stars do such stupid crap, like posing nude or supporting stupid causes to be remembered yet you guys did one show for just 3 seasons and you will be remembered FOREVER.

I mean talking about the Stars aligning right just for them, that does not happen often for any TV or Movie stars but when it does it’s epic.

Paul Carr as Lieutenant Lee Kelso.

First "red shirt" to die on Star Trek.

Ironically, while not wearing a red shirt

As far as I can tell, Eddie Paske was only in 2 episodes (he played a red shirt)

I’m guessing the article wasn’t written by a fan.

keonig was in a couple of episodes of ‘the starlost’, a short lived series with a great premise, but lousy execution. it starred keir dullea (sp) who also starred in ‘2001: a space Odessey’

Well, since we are doing ST trivia, my sister provided the voice of the computer in several of the STTNG shows (and no, she's not Majel Barrett) She also provided the voice (voice only) of the Klingon opera singer in an episode called "Unification" (Aktuh and Melota)
