Fans of the beloved franchise Star Trek are mourning the tragic death of Nichelle Nicholas - who passed away from natural causes on Saturday night at the age of 89.
The actress, who is best known for playing Lieutenant Uhura in the sci-fi series, has received an outpour of love from former costars, celebrity friends, and supporters all around the world, after her son, Kyle, confirmed the sad passing on Sunday evening.
But what had she been up since she landed the history-making role more than four decades ago? In the wake of the heartbreaking loss, FEMAIL has uncovered everything she, and her castmates, have accomplished since the space show went off the air in 1969.
Some went on to launch major careers - landing a slew of big movie and TV show roles - while others struggled to land acting gigs, despite the show's immense fame.
The NBC series, which premiered in 1966 and went on for three seasons, was created by Gene Roddenberry and followed the adventures of the starship USS Enterprise and its crew - which was led by Captain James T . Kirk and his first officer Spock.
Aside from Nichols, it starred William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, James Doohan, Eddie Paske. It went on to become one of the most popular shows of its time, and has since inspired numerous other TV shows, remakes, movies, and spinoffs.
As Nichols sadly passes away, take a look at where the rest of the Star Trek cast is now - 43 years after it came to an end. From their other acting credits and achievements to their love lives and scandals, here's a look back at their impressive careers.

Yvonne Craig had many talents. She was a dancer, but best known for playing Batgirl in the old Batman show. Call me a white supremacist, since that is now all the rage, but I liked her best with white skin. Green skin never did much for me...

It’s an UK newspaper, they just don’t understand Star Trek the way we do.

What, no Chekov or Sulu?
Takei is an idiot lefty I know, but he does have an interesting backstory, was in the internment camps and all that. And he’s still out and about. He seems to have a good sense of humor too, so there’s that.
About Walter Koenig I know little, but would happily learn more.
But, good article! Have really grown to love William Shatner, I will say that. Whatever that man does, he gives it his all. If everyone strove to do that, the world would be a better place.

Walter Koenig was a regular cast member of Babylon 5 after Star Trek.

Slightly odd coverage in the article to include Eddie Paske and NOT include Walter Koenig, George Takei, Majel Barrett, or, for that matter, Grace Lee Whitney. Paske was more like an extra, who was rarely credited. Grace Lee Whitney was the original female lead in Star Trek, but only lasted for the first few episodes because of a nasty power play by Roddenberry. Roddenberry was having affairs with both Nichelle Nichols and Majel Barrett, whom he would later marry, but Whitney didn't play ball with him. So instead of having the interplay between the beautiful Yeoman Rand and Captain Kirk, Roddenberry went with Kirk falling for an alien female frequently. He liked that, because more revolving female roles gave him more opportunities to score with the casting couch.

Something was lost from Star Trek, TOS, when Grace Lee Whitney left the show.

The first time I saw Star Trek was in the UK in the late 60's (I know, I'm dating myself).
From what I remember, the station there, BBC-1 (I believe) replaced "The Lucy Show" with the first UK runs of "Star Trek".

. . . .and Takei is in my informal ‘Dead Pool’. Shatner as well. And, of course, Brandon and Pelosi.

When one dies at age 89 of natural causes, is it really appropriate to call that a “tragic loss”?

I watched TJ HOOKER on ABC back in 1980s...Yes, William Shatner did a good job in that show...

Tragically?
At 89, I’d say that was a life pretty well lived.
It would have been tragic if she had been 39 instead of 89.
God bless her. RIP.
