The REAL cause of the Civil War.
Vanity | 1957 | Ayn Rand

Posted on 08/01/2022 9:00:05 AM PDT by DiogenesLamp

For some time I have wondered how to explain the cause of the Civil War in simple terms that are easy to understand. I now see that Ayn Rand did it years ago. Laws passed by a Northern controlled Congress routed all the money produced by the South into Northern "elite" pockets.

But that was not what was agreed upon.

States were supposed to be permitted to recede if ‘the union’ was not what they expected or beneficial to them.

What states had more slaves, the Free states or the Slave states?

There is no Constitutional right to secession.

And just what would America have looked like if the South had prevailed?

And was the Confederacy entirely unified itself or did some Southern states want to secede from the Confederacy itself?

Missouri was split on the issue, pro and con.

Where does either the “Articles of Confederation and Perpetual Union” or the “US Constitution” provide that option?

The proper sequence is to identify an event, then look for an explanation. But it seems like here we’re starting with the explanation, then trying to tack it on to an event.

We've had an "explanation" all our lives. We have always been taught that the civil war was about slavery and nothing else.

I believed this for most of my life, and then I stumbled across some information that doesn't make any sense. (Like why Northern states had slavery too, but they didn't get rid of it there first.)

The South was actually producing the vast majority of money funding the national government, but somehow all the money was ending up in Northern pockets.

A war about money makes a lot more sense than a war about morality. Throughout history, most wars have been about money, land and power. Not too many people go to war because they feel sorry for some group of people. That didn't really make sense.

No disrespect meant to the original poster. Just my two cents.

No worries. I believed what most people believe for most of my life.

Add to that list “The Camp Of The Saints”.

The South could have been allowed to succeed, if they had asked.

They unilaterally left.

The elephant in the room is that when people are invaded they have a tendency to fight back.   That is the true story of the War Between the States.   Motive or cause means nothing when repelling armed invaders.

It’s strange and quite sad to see so many folks here pretend that the cause of the Civil War was something other than what the Vice President of the Confederacy actually stated at the time.

We don't even listen to what Vice President Pence says, so why should we pay much attention to what some loser Vice President said 160 years ago?

But the monetary evidence proves what was really going on. The war was about money. It was always about money. The people who stood to profit from the war made it appear to be about slavery, because this paints them as "good guys" instead of corrupt bastards that murdered people over money.

So yeah, when you control all the printing presses, you can claim whatever you want, and paint yourself as a saint.

Yes we do - I draw the IHOP/Waffle House line somewhere around southern Pennsylvania, Northern Maryland and Delaware. South of there you have Waffle Houses in abundance.

I am not a fan of the IHOP at all.

Looking back at previous cultures with the spectrum of today’s vision, and deeming it as evil and inhumane, is just as dangerous as the past cultures viewing other cultures as inferior and inhuman, subject to justified oppression because of feelings of superiority.

Neither is forward thinking.

Really? You’re using the Articles of CONFEDERATION (LOL) as the basis? You know that was scrapped, right?

The South opened fire on Ft. Sumter and The Army of Northern Virginia marched into Maryland on their way to Gettysburg Pa.

So just who invaded who?

Maybe it was from all states signing a contract of “Perpetual Union:”

The founders rejected the requirements of the Articles of Confederation when they created the US Constitution.

A most important requirement of the Articles of Confederation was unanimous consent. The government was not allowed to do anything without the approval of *ALL* states.

When they created the US Constitution, they failed to get approval from all the states, and were therefore violating the Articles of Confederation, making them defunct.

They also never added "perpetual" to the "Union" described by the Constitution.

Virginia, New York and Rhode Island stipulated in their ratification statements that they had the right to take back their powers from the Central government if they ever decided the Central government was infringing upon the rights of the people of their states.

There was no “war” over money.

The South voted for the same Import Tariffs and the North. It was a voluntary tax. It's like you are saying, in today's tax terms, that the Lottery could be the reason for interstate war. After all, some guy in Illinois won Mega Millions, and the South sure bought a lot of Mega Millions Lottery tickets.

We know the reason for the illegal split, and it was solely slavery, according to the CSA’s most elite elected representatives.
