A 23-year-old man who “exited” a plane Friday afternoon before it made an emergency landing at Raleigh-Durham International Airport was found dead around 7 p.m. in Fuquay-Varina, authorities said.

That was the tragic ending to a confusing emergency at RDU Friday. Around 3 p.m., a twin-engine turbo prop aircraft reported landing gear issues as it approached the airport, according to the airport. The plane landed on Runway 5R-23L and veered into the grass, according to the airport. The pilot, the only passenger on the plane when it reached the ground, was taken to a Duke University hospital with minor injuries, an airport spokesperson said.

If there was no door open he probably went thru the landing gear while trying to lower it.

I have never been a subscriber to the ‘jump at last second theory’.
I did tandem.
The plane is not pressurized so may have a simple hatch access to landing gear.
Interesting that this is mentioned in any article but I guess saying he jumped gets more clicks.
At least he wasn’t trying to get a hydrogen bomb to release.

Tandem just doesn’t appeal to me.
It wasn’t until my 6th jet/plane ride that I finally got to experience a landing.
That would be done from the inside of the CASA 212. There are procedures to manually lower the gear via a hand crank from the inside.
What I find interesting is that all the doors are closed and locked.
