Saudi Arabia plans 100-mile-long mirrored skyscraper megacity
The Guardian ^

The promotional material is striking: two mirror-encased skyscrapers stretching more than 100 miles across a swathe of desert and mountain terrain, providing a future home for 9 million people.

In short, economists, architects and analysts are not quite sure. So extravagant is Saudi Arabia’s plan to create an urban utopia that even those working on the project, known as the Line, do not yet know if its scale and scope can ever be realised.

Neom has consistently raised eyebrows due to proposed flourishes such as flying taxis and robot maids, even as architects and economists have questioned its feasibility.

The slickly produced films show a megacity that partly resembles the Death Star with hanging gardens. Residents will have “all daily needs” reachable within a five-minute walk, while also having access to other perks such as outdoor skiing facilities and “high-speed rail with an end-to-end transit of 20 minutes”...

The kingdom’s de facto ruler on Monday laid claim to the Line being the world’s “most liveable city by far”. He said the model he envisaged was a replacement for unchecked urban development and waste that had diminished living standards for residents of cities.

Okay, simple question from someone untrained in building.
Won’t building an immense structure mainly from reflective material create a magnification of heat effect?
Such heat (repeated daytime levels) will eventually warp this structure - correct?

Won’t this same material present a visual hazzard for any pilot entering the airspace nearby? What with those bright reflections shooting up in the sky.

Just think of all those Muslim ‘refugees’ in Europe that nobody wants. They could all fit here so very easily.
Why, the Crown Prince wouldn’t even know they were there.
That’s what the world needs now. Not some giant building lying on it’s side like a wounded buffalo.

If they tried to build that here, we would need to include strategically placed turtle crossings.

Oh. I hadn’t thought of that. Yes. Birds in flight can be easily fooled about the texture of a surface ahead.

All those who oppose this have to do is remind the financers that their very expensive Racing Pigeons are going to be slamming into this. Then, there goes that
$1.9 Million Dollar investment!

Pretty sure their plan is to trap a million foreigners in there and basically reduce them to slaves — while the House of Saud lives elsewhere in luxury.

I love the concept, actually.

You can say goodbye to all the birds in Saudi, however.

And there will be mosques every 100 feet so the imams can wake everyone up for early morning prayers every day in this Saudi paradise on earth. Mo Bone Saw can dream many things, but his population will still run to Dubai for a more Western style life, or Bahrain to sin.

Tabuk has a mild climate? When I lived elsewhere in kingdom that was one place you would never want to go. Story goes that Tabuk sucks so bad when their Desert Storm deployment was over, the British strafed the flight line as a middle finger to the place.

Popular places for super rich Saudis to live are Switzerland and Aspen.

They should thank Biden for making all of that possible.
