Vertical Indoor Farms are outproducing field raised vegetable farms and they're using CRISPR Cas9 gene-edited plants which they patent. Egg laying chickens are being genetically edited to kill the male embryos since they don't lay eggs. Normally they will cull them after birth. These edited laying hens will be patented. They're also working on cattle and pigs and the new improved versions will be patented.

Most corn/soy grown is patented. Monsanto/Bayer owns the seed and farmers have to buy new seed every year because they're not allowed to save seed.

Right now, you can buy laying hens that are pretty much the same as commercial operations. Production Reds are the brown egg layers. Can't remember the breed of commercial white egg hen. The upcoming gene-edited laying hens will be patented and if you can buy them, they'll be expensive. It's all about ownership.
