My guess is that the police vehicle was responding to an urgent call and so didn’t stop for an unexpected and ambiguous situation that it passed on the street.

The tricky thing in this instance would be the level of communications at that time. Had anyone yet called to report the struck pedestrian? Had that information gone out on the police network?

A few years later, probably in the late 1970’s, I was walking up Columbus Avenue in the high 90’s, probably about 97th or 98th. I think Ed Koch was mayor. The area was ok by day but somewhat shady at night. I felt ok during the normal people evening hours and didn’t wander around late at night, so I don’t have any war stories from my time in NYC.

This was the middle of the day. An altercation across the street caught my attention. No shots were fired, but the rumpus caught my attention. There was a shove or a punch and a police officer went down. Within seconds, sirens were to be heard in all directions, and I have never seen so many police cars arrive so fast. It was impressive.

If the struck pedestrian in your story was lying unattended for any period of time, I suspect no one had called it in.

I totally believe it. It also reminded me about the other part of what happened to my dad..., since he had no wallet, he was treated like a homeless person until he could remember who he was and make a phone call. Then someone had to identify him before he could get reasonable treatment. A really bad situation to be in.

I was spending a lot of time on installations in Harlem and Jamaica Center over the last three years. I arrived around 8:00 a.m. and departed around 5:00 p.m. If I wasn’t 6ft/250lb, I would not have been there. The scariest times were when school or whatever let out, and there were large groups of mid-teenagers swarming the streets.

Nary a cop.

You’re correct. My bad. I meant ethnicity.
