Ron DeSantis takes a stand on China buying up American farmland
American Thinker ^ | 24 Jul, 2022 | Andrea Widburg

While it’ll be a cold day in a hot place before Biden takes a stand against Chinese depredations in America, Ron DeSantis is pushing back.

On Friday, Janet Levy wrote about the fact that the Chinese have purchased land in North Dakota, immediately next to two highly sensitive military bases. The Biden administration is unconcerned, but ordinary Americans think it’s a problem when a geopolitical foe starts buying up land around military bases. Now, Governor Ron DeSantis is talking about ways to push back against the Chinese gobbling up American farmland—that is, our food source.

Were we living in normal times, the people in Washington, both in the Biden administration and in Congress, would be getting very worried about the fact that China is buying up massive tracts of American farmland. After all, our population continues to grow, supply chains are breaking down, Ukraine and Russia are ceasing to have food to export, the Dutch government is seizing farmer’s land, Sri Lanka and Panama are having food shortages...and D.C. sits complacently as China buys up land that ought to be feeding Americans.

Ron DeSantis, however, is not complacent. In an appearance on Laura Ingraham’s show, DeSantis said that the Chinese purchases are “a huge problem.” As a general matter, DeSantis says, “I don’t think they should be able to do it.” Indeed, he’s generally disturbed about China’s increasing influence in America. In 2019, Florida shut down the last of its Confucius Institutes, which are organizations that represent the Chinese Communist Party on American campuses.

I am curious as to what the “issues” are that the author believes DeSantis has.

The author is a "former" liberal and sometimes says things that make me wonder about her logical thinking ability.

Seeing as a little Chinese cash will sway 98% of state and federal authorities, I see nothing here but more opportunity for politicians to enrich themselves.

Sometimes a government who cares first for its own people, has to have laws to protect them. I would pass a law that says no foreign interests may purchase American farm lands. It would be in the interest of the country to encourage a return to small farms, family owned businesses, the way they used to be before the corporations took over.

I would add to this law that anyone purchasing a farm must use it for production for the benefit of the American people. Farmland that is to be converted to suburbs must have the approval of both local politicians and a citizen board.

Call me silly but I believe in reciprocity. Mexican law treat border crossers as a felon and up to 2 years in prison, we should do the same.

China allows some limited buying of their land with the following restrictions:

“What are the Restrictions on Buying a Property in China as a Foreigner?
The property must be residential
If the property is commercial, a foreigner must incorporate in China
You may own only one property
You must possess a long-term visa
You cannot be a landlord, as a foreigner
You must pay a 1% deposit and an initial 30% of the purchase price to the seller in RMB, if you are obtaining a ….” (land I think they don’t allow farmland for sale)

We should do the same.

That we don’t makes me think many of our politicians are corrupt/crazy/in a conspiracy. What are the other possibilities?

BTW
Desantis seems Great, no complaints yet from me.

Use Mexico’s laws.

They required a citizen be an investing partner, and if I am not mistaken, the majority partner.

For that reason, I think they may both be in prison for political crimes before Mayday, 2024.

The DC Lubyanka is waiting.

I personally think that DeSantis needs to take a stand on DNC vote fraud factories across the nation, before the 2022 "election".

We must get our food producers back from foreign hands. Most of our beef is made by Brazil, Smihfield is owned by the Chinese, look at your can goods, some are made in China. Time to bring food producers to America.

Trump has Florida in the bag, and there are other swing states that Trump could pull a VP from, (a real VP, not the duplicitous Pence-types).

Plus I would hate to see FL fall into lesser hands.

That said, I think Trump/DeSantis would be the best ticket in my lifetime and would get more done in 4, 8 and 12 years, (assuming a resulting DeSantis administration would endure), than the last 10 Presidential administrations combined.

The nation would see, with absolute clarity, that historically our political class has become lazy, entitled and do nothing in the best interests of those they purport to serve.

Pelosi, McConnell, Schumer, Nadler, Schiff, Swalwell, and many, many more ought to be horse-whipped out of their offices before being tarred and feathered for their transgressions against our nation.

I know - I thought that as well, but there may be some circumstances that require such. Let’s face it, both of our countries are now inhabited with people who lack the morals/religious values/care for mankind that made our nations thrive. We’re dealing with a large number of indoctrinated, poorly-educated, freedom hating useful idiots. That does have to be taken into consideration. Plus, having enough farmland to feed your own nation is crucial. Food independence is more important than energy independence and must be protected.

That already happens in cases where there is a national security issue. There is a board I used to write positions on, the Committee on Investments in the US (CFIUS). I was part of the DoD team that wrote positions for it. It doesn’t do any good if leadership isn’t insistent on protecting the US.
