“You couldn’t pay me $ 5000 to listen to him for 5 minutes!”

If you were in a military barracks in ‘77 you probably heard the hell out of Bruce Springsteen cuz that’s all those NE grunts played. Over and over and over, the counter was Lynard Skynyrd over and over and over again. P-Funk was happening too... I miss those days of monster stereos and trying to grab some shuteye after an all night watch.

Boogie-wonderland...

When I was in the military in the early 80s, you could tell pretty reliably what part of the country they were from by the music they played.

People from the Deep South played Lynyrd Skynyrd. West Coasters played Van Halen. Mid-Westerners played Journey. Folks from the Northeast played Springsteen and those from Texas played ZZ Top.

LOL, the “Music Wars” in nearly any branch of the military...I remember those.

But at least most of the music that people fought over having to hear involuntarily was pretty good ranging from Country to Motown to Heavy Metal.

Now? I cannot imagine. Rap or...what?

P-Funk still gets it done for me.

I was stationed in Germany from 77-81. Everyone bought themselves a monster stereo system.

I bought at least ten albums a month, mixed my own tapes. Wasn't much for me to do after hours, as I lived a dozen miles off base. No TV for four years, it wasn't that bad.

Weekends during the summer, you'd find me driving up and down the Mosel River, looking for winefests, or I'd drive up to Koblenz to dine at the Konigsbacher brewery: great jagerschnitzel and bock beer on tap.

Came back to the states with over 400 albums, still have them, too.
