Conservative explains why Maryland Republicans have committed 'mass suicide'
AlterNet ^ | July 20, 2022 | Alex Henderson

Maryland’s Larry Hogan is a conservative non-MAGA Republican governor in a blue state who has received a lot of Democratic votes — especially in the 2018 midterms, when he ran for reelection and defeated Democratic nominee Ben Jealous by 12 percent. 2018 was generally a good year for Democrats, who enjoyed a major blue wave in the U.S. House of Representatives that year. Yet Republican Hogan enjoyed a double-digit reelection victory in a blue state.

Because Maryland has gubernatorial term limits, Hogan cannot seek a third term — and in Maryland’s 2022 Republican gubernatorial primary, he endorsed former Maryland Commerce Secretary Kelly M. Schulz. But former President Donald Trump endorsed Schulz’s far-right, ultra-MAGA primary opponent Dan Cox, who defeated Schulz when the primary election was held on Tuesday, July 19.

Never Trump conservative Jim Swift, in an article published by The Bulwark on July 20, argues that Maryland Republicans have screwed up badly by nominating an extremist “kook" over the more moderate, Hogan-endorsed Schulz.

Letting democrats define who is "conservative", is a lot like letting them define what is "sexual relations" are. It's a lot like letting democrats define what "a woman" is, what "mostly peaceful" is, what a "human fetus" is, what "common sense" laws are. In summary, don't let democrats define any words at all, because they only have a criminal grasp of the English language.

Hogan is far from conservative. What is wrong with these people?

And Baltimore is still a crime shithole led by black crooks and leftists.

I go back to Gov./Mayor Theodore McKeldin - 1956- who was perhaps the last old time decent Democrat mayor of Baltimore. He was a nice person to talk to. Mayor Schaeffer was also good but the left-marxists crippled the “last good hope to pull Baltimore out of the cesspool” that it was becoming. He never stood a chance!

Never Trump conservative Jim Swift...

"Conservative" Jim Swift supported President Trump's "impeachment" and has attacked Kari Lake, Glenn Youngkin, J.D. Vance and other real conservatives. He's about as conservative as Jesse Jackson is Christian.

It is not the job of republicans to support a RINO just so there can be an R beside the name. We spend a lot of money doing it. Thats a waste.

“I don’t think he’s got any chance at the White House GOP nomination, but a Senate seat couldn’t possibly hurt. And it’s a backup plan if he wants to stay in politics.”

Agree, he’s still a very popular governor and could have taken a Senate seat...but forget GOP nomination, he’s demented even thinking he would have a chance.

But it shows who he is, which isn’t good. In the Senate, he may have been another Romney - a jerk, but far more useful to MAGA than a Democrat. He won’t even do that for us.

Better to have Democrats implement Democrat policies so they get the blame.

Cox knows the truth. Thus he’s a kook.

There’s going to be a lot more kooks coming out.

I felt obligated to share this quality example of objective reporting from someone named Alex Henderson from some website called AlterNet with the Freeper community. Larry Hogan is the "conservative" of the title.

I can't gather what, if anything, this Alex Henderson has done in his life to warrant being worth listening to, opinion editorials worth reading should be written by people who are worth listening to, by virtue of their experience, work, unique insight... something. Not merely people who submitted articles because they write things for a living and can poop out 500 words on command to keep fresh content churning on a website.

Regardless, back to the situation in Maryland. Hogan, contrary to a lot of comments on this forum, didn't do a bad job being a Republican governor of Maryland. Considering the voter registration disparity, a republican getting elected at all in a statewide Maryland election is pretty remarkable, though Maryland has a history of their republican candidates coming close more than you'd think.

Does Hogan have a finger on the pulse of conservatism on a national level? Probably not, but he has been able to get elected and reelected in Maryland, and that's no small feat.

Is Dan Cox electable in Maryland? I personally think that's the real question, and the registration advantage for Democrats (plus the seething hatred of Trump the closer you get to DC) makes it a whole lot tougher but if someone like him never gets a chance to have a fair shot at the race, one will never know. Gerrymandering keeps the electoral representation looking very blue, but if the congressional lines were more fairly drawn, it would be a lot closer to 60-40 representation in congress. Cox has to hammer on the issues that local Marylanders care about and get a ground game that can overcome the state party sitting on its hands.

It seems to me that RHINO Republicans have committed suicide. They’re losing left and right. They have a choice of backing Republican MAGA candidates or left wing Democrats. No one will be surprised when they choose the latter.

Hogan governed as far to the right as anyone would be able to in Maryland. The choices in Maryland are always limited. You can have blue or you can have bluish. But red is not an option. Look at Baltimore, the democrats are killing that city and the citizens within. But they keep voting for what they get. There are some deep red areas but they’re segregated and jerrymandered out into the blue districts so that they’re not represented.

So the point he’s making is that we nominated Dan Cox who can never get elected in Maryland because he’s a conservative. We should have nominated Kelly Schultz, because she is a red-hat democrat with an R next to her name. A ‘common sense republican’ who will bend over for the blue mafia. Then we can listen to people say “what are you complaining about? Your governor’s a republican!”

Some people rather have a democrat in office than spend 12 years being repeatedly stabbed in the back by a republican. we have to remember that Never-Trump republicans are a part of the uniparty. They’re the ones that are a part of ‘the Wheel’ that trump was trying to break.

Maryland is a deep blue shit hole. It has been for quite a while thanks to the festering canker sore that is Baltimore on one side and overspill from the DC Swamp on the other.

Republicans are going to “lose out” by not having a RINO like Larry Hogan in place who stands for absolutely nothing that real Republicans stand for? Bullcrap. Yes, any real Republican - that is a MAGA Republican - will almost certainly lose the governor’s race in Maryland, but 1) it affirms what the Republican party actually stands for and 2) it denies the RINOs a seat.

Both of those are huge benefits. Every time a RINO loses, America wins.

I’m 71 years old - lived in Maryland for the past 60 years.
Marylanders are now facing in November:
A liberal black governor
A liberal black speaker
A liberal black AG
Luckily I have only 2 more years to work.
I’m gone - my house is going on the market in the next few weeks.
I’ll move over to Virginia - not DC suburbs but tidewater northern neck and take it from there. I’ll rent a small apartment near work for a couple of years.
I’m not paying taxes to these criminals.
