Vigilante = The law when the police refuse to do the job.
Vigilante is actually a member of an organization formed to replace non existent or corrupt police. A spur of the moment one off taking care of business guy is a Hero.
Everyone knows now after Uvalde - or they should know. The cops exist to arrive with the body bags and the surly attitude a half hour after the shooting starts. They may do something or they may not. In California, the hero would be sitting in jail awaiting state and federal charges.
