Why does his jacket have a Taiwan flag on in in the first place?
I mean kudos to him for not kowtowing. Mucho respecto for that. I work in a place where a lot of military also work- I’ve never heard people talk about going to see a movie so excitedly before. I am glad.
But curious why that flag is there...? Anyone know?
Military support for Taiwan and its sovereignty vis-a-vis China was stout in the Reagan era, such that when the original Top Gun was filmed, edited and released, the only question was authenticity. Real “Mavericks” were wearing that patch in support of Taiwan, so the movie version did too.
Throwback to American volunteers who flew combat missions for the Kuomintang in ‘41, ‘42.
Lots of history behind our alliance with the Taiwanese, including Vietnam. Our base there was referred to as “CCK” among aircrews.

It was Mavericks fathers bomber jacket and had to do with his father’s military history.
I don’t know the exact story but that’s the gist of it.
His father was a Flying Tiger in WWII?
