I love the photos of air travel in the 1950s and 1960s. Even the first time I flew in the late 1970s, people still dressed up. Probably into the early 90s when everything started falling apart as far as people dressing nicely to travel. I miss America being a civilized country.

“I’m 68. I remember when people dressed up to travel.”

My grampa, born in 1890, always insisted the family ride in the smoking car — he said no germs could survive the tar coating every surface.

I found it interesting reading the comments to this. Now I understand the resulting panic about Covid....hand sanitizer etc.

There are a lot of very fearful people...even on here. I never ever worry about grocery carts....seats on planes etc. It doesn’t enter my mind. I get my hands dirty working outside in the summer.

I’m seldom sick.

And the fear-mongering angle to not have people be free and travel freely throughout the world continues ....

This is the proper way to fly. Forget the cattle cars and germ Petri dishes.

https://www.cntraveler.com/story/all-the-ways-to-fly-private-starting-at-dollar100-per-flight

Upper middle class can get in on the good stuff most of the time. Is a few hundred bucks more each way worth not having to deal with major airports and the unwashed masses you bet your sweet bippy it is. Once you fly private or semi private you will never fly the cattle cars again. Treated with the respect you earned and not baggage to move at the highest profit possible. For me it’s not having to show up hours early you can be dropped of 15 min before wheels up and no one is stressed about it. Why yes I would like a Manhattan up please thank you my goodman. It’s how flying was always supposed to be. I can vouch for JSX,NetJets, and Oneflight all are top notch service.

That would be just after Christmas, 1972 if memory serves.

Eastern flight 401.

I read on that one quite a bit.

Two different computers on an early model. I7 and I8 between pilot and copilot. Not sure which autopilot computer on which side.

Pilot must have accidentally bumped stick at 2,000 altitude hold when he got up.

Copilot did not apparently feel the autopilot disengage. Plane descending at 3fps.

Nobody noticed nor monitored the altimeter. Midnight over the Everglades.

When they turned back for Miami they were already banking when they noticed they were at 50 feet.

Another aircraft saw it and reported they drove it right into the ground. Wingtip caught of course.

Very tragic. Very few survived, wow.

Wow, I was telling my husband on our last unpleasant commercial flight that I thought someone should look into setting up some kind of private “club” experience, with small jets and you do a one time security to join it, then when you fly it is almost like just going to a small regional airport and hopping on a private plane. This looks similar to what I was imagining. What a great idea if you need to fly a lot. So cool that someone is starting this up.

I hope they expand to many more airports.

Well considering Biden is flying illegals all over the country that’s probably good advice

Just try to stay awake on an overseas flight that last 12-14 hrs.

I sleep for at least eight hours on those and I’m just fine. :)

When I watch reruns of Perry Mason, I always smile when I see people getting off the bus in suits or a woman in a necklace. I also smile when stranger knocks on a door and the lady answering invites them in....

I don’t think my icon came out as desired

One of the people seeing a missile was a Vietnam veteran - he said he knows exactly what an ascending missile looked like.

Hmmmm.

What I was trying to say was I think there were some interesting passengers on KAL 007, too, IIRC.

Never thought of that. Great idea, and probably helps the tasked with rounding up the carts.

My first ride on a 747 was from Chicago to St. Louis. Which seems weird. But the plane had come from London, with a stop in Chicago first for some reason.

I had to get to STL to connect to SUX (my favorite 3 letter airport code)

I agree with you on the L-1011. I think I only rode one once, from SFO to DFW, but that thing was quiet and comfortable.

If you want to fly a 747 in the USA, you might have to fly Lufthansa from Denver to Germany. Not sure anyone else is flying them with passengers in the USA anymore.

But... but...

They talk about how great their air filtration is for fighting the COVID-19 virus, and now we're supposed to think that everything else on the plane is unsafe EXCEPT for the air?

I think the human body is a little more resilient than that (but I don't wear shorts on planes anyway).

Same here. Germs can take their own chances. I’d bet that a lot of people get sick from the stress of worrying about getting sick.

I like to dress up to fly, just short of my funeral wear. My reason is, airline staff tend to treat you better if you look like a pro, and not some goober wearing a bar t-shirt and shorts.

I normally look like a goober wearing a bar t-shirt and shorts. But when I fly, I want to improve the odds of a good experience, so I try to look good if need be.
