They'll do it if they can get away with it. It's up to the consumer marketplace to refuse to buy their cars, when that happens they'll drop these unethical schemes. The hardware is already in the car and you can be sure they charged you for it initially so the argument that "we didn't want people to pay for features they don't want" is BS, they've already paid for it.

I have a 2007 BMW Z4 that's my play car. It has heated seats and I don't have to pay a subscription for them. I can absolutely assure any BMW executive reading this that I will never buy another BMW if I have to pay a monthly fee for the heated seats to work.
