If a BMW was made to order, modern manufacturing techniques (given what some industries assembly lines are already doing) would know which car was made for which new owner, and its parts, including optional parts, would be computer selected to arrive on the assemply line, only per car as needed.
Monthly subscription of car options is like the old AT&T gambit of “leasing” your indestructible phone that lasted decades.

Very sleazy. IBM once rented all of their data processing equipment — you couldn’t buy it. There was a lawsuit or something and they were forced to sell the equipment.
There’s something about ownership that good for individuals and society.
In the case of cars, rentable options can probably be turned on and off over the internet.
In the case of BMW’s idea, might be a good time to buy stock in 12-volt heating pad companies.
Jailbreaking cars will become mainstream.
