Some, sure. Dali did the same. And that’s largely all Warhol ever did.
But some early Cubist stuff is amazing.
I have a later pen, ink, and pencil drawing by Picasso that my father was given by Picasso himself when Picasso came to Israel. (My father helped with security as he wanted to go to Arab areas.). We have many photos of Picasso darting it.
It’s about 2x4 foot and of his long time muse, Francine.
Francine was very pretty in a somewhat hard Spanish peasant sort of way. She also suffered from depression, although she was very put together in public. Working security, my father saw it all, good and bad.
Anyway, if you look closely at the drawing, her face is really a Greek theatre mask, and it’s slipped to the side. Bleeding out of her head is “blue” — depression.
It’s quite beautiful and sad.
What Picasso did (when he was not screwing around) was capture an emotion or moment in time.
But, yes, I agree, much was muck. Can’t all be hits.
