How is that? How are they staying in business? Is the US government secretly subsidizing the auto industry while we “transition”?

The Ford, Chevy, Toyota, Mazda and Cadillac/GMC dealers here all have practically empty lots. The only vehicles they have are a few high end 4WD Trucks that nobody needs.

The local Cadillac/Buick/GMC dealer did something unusual to try and get sales, they apparently went out and bought a dozen used Corvettes and have them lined up across their front lot............

Is the US government secretly subsidizing the auto industry while we “transition”?

It has been, but indirectly through ultra-low interest rates. Now that rates are rising sharply and the price of new cars has shot up into what used to be the second home price range, I expect sales to collapse along with the affordability of the 7 - 10 year "car mortgages" the dealers have been offering. Meanwhile the used car market will be hit with a glut of repos when the recession bites.
