No idea why he is suddenly going after Musk. Seems pretty likely that he is getting to the age where his already terrible interpersonal impulse control is getting worse.

I agree.
His impulse control and egoism once served a bigger purpose.
It doesn’t anymore.
Saying that he has impulse control is one way to put it. I think the fact that he isn’t afraid to hit out against things and people he disagrees with is a good part of what differentiates him and endears him to his supporters.
I’m not so sure this is purely emotional. I he really wanted Musk to get twitter, not for his own personal sake, but for the benefit of those on the right who have been censored so badly, and now he is hoping he can egg Musk into not backing out.
