The man, who has not been named, allegedly walked on an unauthorized path to reach the summit of Mount Vesuvius at 1,281 meters, according to a spokesperson from the Carabinieri of the Forestry department of the Park of Vesuvius.
The spokesperson told ABC News he believes the man went on the unmarked path because tickets for visiting Vesuvius, which cost $2,500 per day, were all booked.
The guides immediately started moving toward the area and were able to come to the man's rescue after seeing him attempt to retrieve his cellphone, according to Carabinieri's spokesperson.
The guides also performed first aid on the man's minor injuries to his legs, arms and back.
According to Carabinieri's spokesperson, two other Americans, two Brits and one Austrian were with the American man who fell.

Suicide?

“tickets for visiting Vesuvius, which cost $2,500 per day...”
I have a feeling his aim was to parlay that into more $, by getting views and likes, or whatever, on Idiotgram (Instagram).
A more apt description would be “jackass”.
Play stupid games....
“The man, who has not been named ...”
Parents! Name your children!!! Sheesh.
This could all have been avoided but for this simple expedient.
Oddly, the “Ugly American” was a discription of his visage. He was in fact, a good guy in the book, the hero as it were. Never bothered with the movie.
As is so often the case, the term was co-opted to mean something entirely different by the media and academia....you know, our betters.
That’s a tour. We walked up. 10 Euro.
Yes, good picture. I would venture to guess, the people of Pompeii would much rather have seen that view of Vesuvius, than the one they experienced. 👍
If he wasn't, the fall would have been a LOT worse. Might have died.
I visited Vesuvius a couple years ago, walked the trail right to the summit, looked down into the smoking crater; could have had a fine selfie if it had occurred to me. No idea what this fool was trying to do, but like so many selfie-idiots, he had no idea either. BTW, no way it cost 2500$ for a ticket. 2500 Italian lira, maybe.
I’d be content walking the ruins of Herculaneum, followed by the pizza di Napoli you’ve already described.

Italy uses the Euro, the Lira went away a long time ago.
LOL - they sure didn’t cost that when I lived in Napoli (Pozzuoli) as a “tween.”
Those goofy and wacky ‘mercans and their “selfies”. LOL. They travel all over the world just to see who can take the “coolest” selfie.
Here, hold muh Birra Moretti!
I had a state police dog jump in my perimeter cruiser once while I was working at the state prison. They were there searching the prison for contraband and he jumped in thinking it was his handlers truck. They were identical from the outside. Needless to say I kept my hands to myself! The trooper laughed his ass off while apologizing.

The Chinese by far are the worst with selfies. They stop right in the middle of the sidewalk making everybody wait.
Sorry but Vesuvius is indeed smoking.. I was there just a couple years ago. Last eruption in 1943 means it could go again at almost any time, although the greatest risk is at Solfaterra.
Remake of Joe vs The Volcano with Tom Hanks????/
