Eating nuts tied to lower prevalence of chronic kidney disease
Medical Xpress / American Journal of Nephrology ^ | July 8, 2022 | Koushu Wang et al

Posted on 07/10/2022 12:06:46 PM PDT by ConservativeMind

Nut consumption is associated with a significantly lower prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and lower all-cause mortality with or without CKD, according to a study.

Koushu Wang and colleagues used data from 6,072 U.S. adults (aged 20 years or older) to evaluate the association between the consumption of nuts and the prevalence of and mortality associated with CKD.

The researchers found that consuming nuts one to six times per week was associated with a lower prevalence of CKD (odds ratio, 0.67). Higher nut consumption in the non-CKD population also was significantly associated with lower all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. There was a consistently significant inverse association between consuming nuts one to six times per week and all-cause mortality in the CKD population (hazard ratio, 0.63).

"We recommend the CKD population to have an adequate intake of nuts one to six times per week, while the consumption frequency can be more flexible for the non-CKD," the authors write. "Further prospective studies should be conducted to confirm this conclusion."

I wonder what mechanism they propose is responsible for this? Nuts in general are suppose to be very good for a healthy biome.

With my luck it won’t apply to my beloved macadamia nuts.

I wish the article had listed some “good” nuts, but I didn’t see that. I like pecans, but not cashews (not a nut), for example. Beer nuts? Only with beer!

Does peanut butter count?
If so, I’m good.

Raw (not salted/roasted) tree nuts are great for health. They include almonds, cashews, walnuts, pistachios, pecans, etc.

I eat a approximately 1/3 cup of lightly salted mixed nuts almost daily (almonds, cashews, macadamia, pecans and pistachios). Didn’t know this, but glad to hear it. I just love them.

I must be a little contrarian here. I love nuts, but my urologist told me to avoid them because they contribute to the formation of kidney stones. I had about two years of almost constant kidney stones—total agony. During that time my kidney function tests were very low. The list of foods that add to kidney stones is long, and it seems it’s impossible to avoid everything. What has worked for me is to drink LOTS of Crystal Light, which has a lot of citric acid which helps break down kidney stones.

Nuts are high in potassium, phosphorus and magnesium. Is there a doctor on FR that can explain how that is good for people with kidney disease? Potassium and Phosphorus are regularly tested and kidney disease patients are told to stay within certain ranges for both. It doesn’t take much to throw those numbers out of range.

They have the blood test results in the study and they are stratified by frequency of eating nuts, but they don’t have the specific types of nuts the participants ate listed in the study.

What obnoxious journalism, they don’t even specify which kind of nuts?

Many “nuts” aren’t technically nuts.

Peanuts are not nuts, they are legumes.
Cashews almonds and pistachios aren’t nuts either, they are “drupes”.
If you saw how Cashews grow on the outside of a fruit you’d be surprised.

This is very good information to have. I don’t have that problem now, but one never knows which door Fate will fling open for you to walk through.

What’s the difference between beer nuts & deer nuts?

Beer nuts are a dollar-fifty

Deer nuts are under a buck.

I’ve had kidney stones several times, the worst pain ever. But after taking magnesium supplements and keeping myself well hydrated, I’ve never had them again. Magnesium citrate is one of the forms of magnesium I’ve taken.

I found the study, looks like the journalist did nothing wrong.

https://www.karger.com/Article/FullText/524382

They simply asked people how often they consumed “nuts”, and didn’t ask which kind or limit selection to certain kinds.
