Yes, as was the victim here. But it’s worth noting that there were no negroes at Babi Yar. Every last murderer was white. Every last man who shot crying children in the back of the head was white. So it is, I think, an error to focus on race when it comes to monsters. Better to focus on what made them monsters in the first place.

I grew up when ‘Negro’ was the polite way to refer to Americans whose ancestors came from Africa. I don’t ever remember it being used as an insult or a slur. Those inclined to insult had another word at hand to use.

Blacks seem to have to change what they prefer to be called because whatever they choose soon acquires negative connotations. It’s a real shame for those who are upstanding and good.
